  • Dogfooding the Sueetie Wall Message Editor

Developers should have to use the apps they build, or in my particular case, are in the process of building.  I thought fellow devs would find the morning’s updates to the Sueetie Wall Message Editor interesting, if for no other reason than being able to relate with updating an app’s insufficiencies because you use the thing. And I’ve been using the newest Sueetie Wall titled The Edge a lot, covering the community happenings of YetAnotherForum.NET, BlogEngine.NET, Gallery Server Pro and ScrewTurn...

  • Announcing The Edge, a Series on the Applications You Love

This is something I wanted to do for some time, a series of posts about the applications that make up Sueetie:  BlogEngine.NET, YetAnotherForum.NET, Gallery Server Pro and ScrewTurn Wiki.  This will be fun for me and interesting for all of us who love working with these apps. The Edge will have news and tips on the Big Four from blog posts, forum discussions, tweets and elsewhere.  These are active communities and there’s a lot going on.  Fortunately there is RSS to the rescue...

  • Introducing Sueetie Taxonomies

I read a recent article on Smashing Magazine about creating custom taxonomies in WordPress and thought, "Ooooo, I want that!"  I also happened to be thinking about a new Wall on Sueetie.com with news and tips on BlogEngine.NET, YetAnotherForum.NET, Gallery Server Pro and ScrewTurn Wiki (announcement soon) and knew that a beefy categorization feature was a must.  The result is the introduction of a Taxonomy architecture that can be used on a Sueetie Wall and in the future, elsewhere...

  • Text Parts Come to Sueetie Blogs

I should begin by defining Text Parts, since they're Old School and many of you probably are unfamiliar with them.  Text Parts are BBCode-like, bracketed text strings with specific properties that when displayed on a page are converted into something else. Text Parts are traditionally used with blog posts, which is the extent of their initial functionality in Sueetie. In the future I hope to incorporate Text Parts in other applications like Sueetie CMS and Marketplace as well.  Here's...

  • Message Editing Now Supported on the Sueetie Wall

I couldn’t let the first release of Sueetie Walls go out the door without providing the ability to edit wall posts.  Wall Message Editing is optional as a Wall Configuration setting.  When the "CanEditMessages" Wall Property is enabled users can edit their own messages as can Site Content Administrators.  I should mention that users cannot delete messages on a Sueetie Wall, as only Content Administrators can delete both messages and comments. How to Edit a Wall Message Wall...

  • The Thrill of Gallery Server Pro 2.6 at Sueetie.com

I'm very happy (thrilled, in fact) to announce the Sueetie upgrade to Gallery Server Pro v2.6.  Here is Roger Martin's announcement of v2.6 with a list of the new features and a few screenshots.  One of the coolest new features is drag-n-drop upload, with all of the same power of previous releases like auto-extraction from zip files, security, file size controls, and more.  There's a great screenshot of the new upload component on Roger's announcement.  Here's...
  • How Sueetie Supports Multiple Walls

I've been saying from the beginning that Sueetie Walls were designed to support multiple walls on a community site, so I thought we could walk through the process of creating a new wall. We Start at the Sueetie Application Level Remember that each wall is viewed as a Sueetie Application, like Forums, the Wiki, a Blog, etc., so that is where we'll begin the process of creating a new Wall. We're going to create a wall for Stephen King aficionados. I have King on the brain because I just...

  • Message Tags Arrive on the Sueetie Wall

With Wall Messages integrated into Sueetie Global Search it was a natural next step to add tagging as well. Here is a screenshot of a Wall Message with tags. To add a tag when posting a wall message, select the "tag" icon circled below and enter the tags. Existing tags that match your entry with automatically display to add taxonomy guidance. Adding Tags to an Existing Wall Message Authors of any message and members of the Sueetie Content Administrator group can add and update tags on existing...

  • Latest Data Type Added to Sueetie Global Search: Wall Messages

A quick blog post to announce that Wall Messages are now fully integrated in Sueetie Global Search.  I had originally planned on adding Wall Comments as well, but decided to stay with Wall Messages only for now.  While adding new data types to Sueetie Search is an easy process, I felt comments in search results would produce more noise than signal. Here's a sample search result with Wall Messages in the mix.  You'll notice "Wall" as one of the optional search areas...

  • RSS To The Sueetie Wall

Sueetie Wall Messages and Comments are now syndicated, so you can keep tabs on the Sueetie Wall action from anywhere. You can subscribe to a Wall and receive all messages and comments in a single feed. You can also subscribe to the comments of a single wall message. Here are the locations of the subscriber links on the Sueetie.com wall. The wall main feed on top left sidebar and message comment subscription link circled at bottom. Messages and Comments in a Single Feed It was important to provide...

  • Sueetie Wall Messages Go Inline (Code)

Sueetie Wall Messages now support the display of inline code blocks.  This may seem like a simple feature to add, but converting the message to simple HTML and preserve multiple coding blocks made it interesting.  Message are normally first stripped of all HTML and line breaks replaced with </p><p> tags.  That wouldn't work to preserve HTML and other code types, so the approach I used was to convert the message string to a StringReader and applying logic line-by-line...

  • Embedded Media Now on the Sueetie Wall

The Sueetie Wall now supports embedded media like video, music, slideshows and more. First here's a screenshot of embedded media on the Sueetie Wall, or experience it yourself at http://sueetie.com/wall. Adding Embedded Media To add embedded media on a Sueetie Wall Message, simply enter the URL in your message body, like so. Determining Embedded Media Urls All urls entered in the body of a Wall Message (or comment) are automatically converted to live hyperlinks. Sueetie knows which links contain...

  • Configuring WCF for Multiple IIS Host Identities in Sueetie

With Sueetie v4.0 shaping up to be a solid Social Media Platform for the Enterprise, I needed to be sure Sueetie could support corporate sites that support multiple IIS host names. An example would be a site accessed both externally and internally, externally at, say, http://external.coolcompany.com and internally at http://coolcompanynet. WCF is able to support only a single base address out of the box, and errors to the server Event Log would be generated for any site whose identity does not conform...

  • Sueetie Wall Images Get a New Handler

The Sueetie Wall supported images for only a couple of weeks, but it's never too soon to re-engineer something for the Greater Good of Sueetie Nation.  To explain why I felt this was a necessary move, let me describe how image handling was initially designed.  Images were stored in 3 sizes to support thumbnail, medium and large display.  File format was [ImageID].[SIZE].JPG.  This made display super speedy, which was the main reason it was chosen.  Images could be displayed...

  • Sueetie Wall Messages Now With Attachments

The Sueetie Wall now supports message attachments uploaded directly from the desktop. Attachments are one of several fun features not officially announced but in the works.  Like message images, file attachments are uploaded prior to a message being posted using the procedure shown below. To display the attachment upload area click on the paperclip icon circled below. After selecting your files click the "Upload Files" button. Your message attachments are now listed with a delete icon...

  • Wall Messages join the Sueetie Calendar Integrated Content Club

One of the data points I record for Sueetie is framework updates on the Sueetie Event Calendar, basically a Changelog in Calendar Format. The Calendar works well to highlight ongoing Sueetie development.  And because of the Calendar Integration in Sueetie, readers who want more information about the update can click and go to a blog post or wiki page for the details.  I wanted to use a Wall Message to describe a framework update on the Calendar and knew this would be a very handy feature...

  • Bring on the Enterprise. Sueetie Now Supports Active Directory

Mark off another item on the Sueetie v4.0 To-Do List.  Sueetie now supports Active Directory!  With the recent announcement of running Sueetie in a subdirectory along with Active Directory Support, Version 4 is shaping up to be a pretty rockin' Enterprise Social Media Platform. Here's how Sueetie Active Directory Integration works. Sueetie doesn't talk directly to Active Directory Domain Services since every company approaches the user data they store in Active Directory differently...

  • Leveraging YetAnotherForum.NET for External Post Display

The new Sueetie Announcement List View Control displays YetAnotherForum.NET content from anywhere on your site. It supports HTML text display and WYSIWYG editing, attached image display and file downloads. It supports all of those things because it leverages the advanced feature set of YetAnotherForum.NET. Here's a screenshot of a sample Announcement List. Announcement images support lightbox display using your favorite plugin as shown below. Leveraging YetAnotherForum.NET As we mentioned, the...
  • New Sueetie Featured Product View Control

A new Featured Product View Control coming in Sueetie v4.0.  It's a simple control that can be easily customized with Sueetie's standard View Templating Model, just as its Sueetie List View cousins.  You can use the control anywhere on your site, not just in the Marketplace. The intention of the Sueetie Marketplace Featured Product View Control is to give Marketplace owners the ability to designate a single product as their Featured Product. The View Control also gives you the ability...

  • Annually Recurring Events With Sueetie Calendars

Sueetie Calendars have always supported multi-day and weekly recurring events. They now support the automated reoccurrence of annual events like birthdays and anniversaries. The keyword here is "automated," where no additional human administration is required other than to enter the event once. We’ll refer to those events as "Annualized Calendar Events." For simplification purposes in both management and architecture Sueetie supports an "IsAnnual" property with each...

  • Sueetie Now Comes in Subdirectory Flavor

A long-time client of mine needed a new corporate community site for which Sueetie was of course the perfect solution. The problem was that the site had to be located in a subdirectory of an existing domain, so it was time to make Sueetie “Subdirectory Friendly.” You'll be hearing more about my client's new Sueetie corporate community site, but the news of the day is that Sueetie now runs in a subdirectory. That's going to make Sueetie a great community option in many more environments...

  • The Sueetie Wall Does Images

The Sueetie Wall now supports uploading images direct from the desktop. If a single image is uploaded it is displayed with larger dimensions, while multiple images are displayed with somewhat smaller dimensions. Each image is linked to a full-size version of the image displayed in a separate browser tab. Here is a screenshot with two wall messages displaying multiple and single images. The Image Upload Process Images are uploaded prior to a message being posted using a simple procedure shown below...

  • Addressing Sueetie Wall Permalinks

An important aspect of a "Wall" application that people might not think about is how to handle individual Wall Message and Comment permalinks.  The content produced by Wall Messages and Comments has a lot of value, and without permalinks the value of that content is drastically reduced.  In Sueetie, Wall Messages and Comments are also integrated into the Data Core for features like Site Activity lists and searching, so we need to easily reference each and every wall message and...

  • Introducing the Sueetie Wall

Every community needs their own wall, just like they need their own forum.  Coming in Sueetie Version 4.0 every Sueetie Community will have one, or a bunch of them if they want.  I wanted to call the feature Community Commons, but people understand "the wall" metaphor, so I decided to go with that.  Here's a screenshot. The Wall will be included in the Sueetie v4.0 Premium Edition planned for early Q1 2012.  As I said earlier, each community can have several walls...
