  • Sueetie Activity Popup Notification jQuery Coexistence

A new feature coming in Sueetie v3.3 is Site Activity Popup Notifications.  This keeps everyone informed of the action without having to reload the page to monitor the Site Activity log.  Here's an example of a Notification Popup. Everything was jake with the Notification Popups on Sueetie.com until I noticed that a jQuery Media Set app I wrote and inserted into a ScrewTurn Wiki Page wasn't displaying the images.  This is what it's supposed to look like.  The problem...
  • Adding Rss Syndication Reporting to BlogEngine.NET

Rss Syndication Reporting is the newest Sueetie Analytics feature coming in Version 3.2.  This is the realization of a long-standing goal to take back control of my BlogEngine.NET feeds from FeedBurner. The longer I work online the more I realize the importance of owning the data my sites create.  There are other reasons I’ve come to think turning a feed over to a Third Party is a bad move, but the bottom line is that I want my feed back.  FeedBurner doesn’t care about it like I do...
  • Sueetie.com Now .NET 4.0…And All That It Implies

Sueetie.com is now 100% .NET 4.0!  Wait a second. I’m noticing you don’t seem to appreciate the scope of that.  Sueetie is an Online Framework consisting of several ASPNET applications, right?  So this means that not only is the Sueetie Root Application and Core Libraries 100% .NET 4.0, but the Gallery Server Pro Media Gallery is .NET 4.0, the ScrewTurn Wiki is .NET 4.0, the BlogEngine.NET blog is .NET 4.0, and the YetAnotherForum.NET forum is .NET 4.0.  Heck, even the Marketplace...

  • Join Me for New England Code Camp 13!

New England Code Camp 13 is nearly upon us, slated for Saturday, March 27th.  I'll be giving a presentation titled "Background Tasks: A Nutritious Part of a Complete Web Application." Waltham is a 3-1/2 hour drive from Burlington, so I'll be driving down late Friday afternoon which is my normal routine and staying at the Bedford Doubletree Hotel.   Their advanced booking rate is currently $89, total $99 with tax.  Interestingly I just checked the Waltham Westin is...

  • Some "Background" on my New England Code Camp 13 Presentation

I'm pumped for the presentation I submitted for New England Code Camp 13 titled "Background Tasks: A Nutritious Part of a Complete Web Application."  I'm currently adding the finishing touches to the new Sueetie Background Tasks Model coming in Gummy 1.3 (more on that later!) and felt it would make an interesting topic for Code Camp 13. I've worked with background tasks in ASPNET for years and have a few tips and tricks to share on planning and adding multi-threading in...

  • Post-Turkey Day Geek Drippings

The day after Turkey Day, or Fatpants Friday, is a good day to relax and do some light geeking. My Post-Turkey Day geeking included BlogEngine.NET fix on dbvt.com Restored my Sueetie development baseline to YAF 1.9.3 Sueetie Control Panel Membership updates BlogEngine.NET fix on dbvt.com Two days ago the Iranian Stallion, Keyvan Nayyeri, informed me that my blog comment notifications weren’t working. I can’t relax when I know something’s broken, so it was at the top of the Post-Turkey Day to-do list...
  • My 65 Favorite Tweets of PDC09

Microsoft did a fantastic job making PDC09 accessible to everyone, even to geeks as far away as Vermont. Their real-time HD video coverage of the keynotes and conference presentations was awesome. And what Microsoft didn't provide at http://microsoftpdc.com, Twitter did. The combination of microsoftpdc.com and the #PDC09 stream allowed me to feel like I was at the conference without having to fly across the country to get there. Fascinating, really, the ability to follow the flow of a PDC conference...

  • A Sueetie Forum Fun Link Control for YetAnotherForum.NET

I've been spending quality latenight geek time with YetAnotherForum.NET 1.9.4 beta lately.  I am so excited about the new features coming and the customizations I'm working on.  The two are feeding off one another; so many new features in 1.9.4, both front-end and back are firing me up to highlight YAF.NET and bring more community services into its domain of cool.  It's difficult not to blog about what's coming, but I never blog about something until it's on the...
  • The Donuts of Code Camp 12

Back in Vermont after a wonderful day at Code Camp 12. A big thanks to Chris Bowen, Chris Pels, Microsoft, and everyone else who helped organize another successful New England Code Camp. I thought I’d share some of the highlights with you in…The Donuts of Code Camp 12. You can view the entire Donuts of Code Camp 12 album on Flickr. Read More...

  • In Preparation for New England Code Camp 12

This post serves as an invite and reference for future Code Camps.  New England Code Camp 12 is nearly upon us, slated for Saturday, October 17th.  I'll be giving a presentation titled "Would you like some Community with that Web Site?" on .NET Open Source networking applications and Sueetie. Waltham is a 3-1/2 hour drive from Burlington, so I'll be driving down late Friday afternoon which is my normal routine.  I'll be staying at a different hotel this time thanks...

  • Using JQuery to supplement CSS inadequacies

The technical depth of this post is about as lightweight as it can be, but the subject is interesting because it represents a new level of controlling page layout with JQuery.  The use of "CSS inadequacies" in the post subject is a little misleading, as I'm also considering the inadequacies of the developer's CSS chops.  That would be me. The situation was that I was placing a paging control at the right-side of a page. Everything was jake until the last page when the...
  • What Can I Say About Vermont Code Camp 1

Folks have been talking about a Vermont Code Camp for two years now. “Yeah, yeah. Sounds great. Never happen,” I thought. Well today it happened in a very big way, and the amazing thing is that it wasn’t Julie Lerman who was responsible for its success. An Irishman with great pecs named Rob Hale organized our first Vermont Code Camp and in the process established himself as Vermont’s newest Geek Idol. Everything went perfectly at today’s Vermont Code Camp 1, from Rob’s opening welcome gathering at...

  • A Non-Compressed BlogEngine.NET 1.5 Developer Tip

You could say I've spent a lot of quality time working with BlogEngine.NET 1.5 in Visual Studio, and yet I couldn't figure why I couldn't enjoy a good old-fashioned .NET Runtime Error when I screwed something up.  Instead I encountered something like this in my browser. Not the most helpful response.  Stepping through the code I could always locate the trigger point, but it sure would have been nice to see the actual error in English.  I Googled and Binged and searched...
  • First Sueetie Smart Placeholder Control Surfaces

When I was initially contemplating how to go about restricting Sueetie blog comments to Registered Users I thought I'd use a smart placeholder control to display or hide the comment form.  While I went another route on blog comments, the Sueetie UserRolePlaceHolder took form as a very useful control, the first of several Sueetie "smart" PlaceHolders we'll no doubt be seeing.  To demonstrate the UserRolePlaceHolder I added a simple welcome greeting to registered users on...

  • New Gallery Server Pro Recent Photos View

I was looking for an opportunity to dig into Roger Martin's rockin' Gallery Server Pro source code for a while now, and creating a Recent Photos View for Sueetie was my big chance.  Here's the new Recent Photos View of my personal Photo Gallery so you'll know what I'm talking about.     Below is what it looked like before with Gallery Server Pro's default home page view. I wanted to go to my Photo Gallery and immediately see what's new, so I designed...
  • The MSDN Northeast Roadshow: It’s What’s For Dinner

The MSDN Northeast Roadshow with Chris Bowen, Jim O’Neil and Bob Familiar is what’s for dinner. It’s required for any serious .NET developer. Those who skip the MSDN Northeast Roadshow are the symbolic equivalent of the sleek black van passengers to whom Philip Seymour Hoffman points and yells, “Looooo-ser! Move on!” as they drive past the flipped truck in Twister. The MSDN Roadshow is a day-long event for .NET developers. It is required for several reasons. First, you get to see Chris Bowen’s smiling...

  • AspNetHostingPermission Security Exception Fix in IIS7

I'm starting to regularly use the excellent ASP.NET Ajax Control Toolkit and had an interesting incident involving the toolkit last week on my home office Windows 2008 server.  Periodically when I loaded an Ajax Toolkit Control on my DBVT development site I would encounter a Security Exception on System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission.  System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral...

  • DBVT.COM Now Sueetie 0.3.26 Compliant!

Nothing like a substantial upgrade of your website to lift your spirits. This afternoon I put an upgraded version of DBVT.COM online that is now running BlogEngine.NET 1.5 and Gallery Server Pro 2.2.3402. I also wrapped the site in the latest Sueetie framework bits for better integration and a few new features. First to BlogEngine.NET 1.5. It’s such a pleasure upgrading BlogEngine.NET, knowing that with each release you’ll enjoy even better performance than the last. And BlogEngine.NET was always...
  • Patterns and Origins: Sueetie Member Following

Sueetie Member Following is complete for BlogEngine.NET post authors and commenters. Implementation of member following for, say, YetAnotherForum.NET will be somewhat different than member following for BlogEngine.NET. Still, I like to write up the documentation while the code is still fresh, so here is the newest Sueetie Wiki document, “The Design of Sueetie Member Following.” I’ll update the wiki after I implement following on YAF.NET, ScrewTurn Wiki and Gallery Server Pro. I hope to have the source...
  • Sueetie Friends and Favorites in the works

Sueetie is a member-centric collection of integrated, yet loosely-coupled social networking applications which together form an online community.  Building that rich member community experience is where I'm currently pouring on the Sueetie development love.  We started down that road with Avatars, which we'll be using for (drum roll…) Friends and Favorites! More accurately, Sueetie will use a Followers and Favorites model, closer to the Twitter approach than to Facebook. There will...
  • One Man's Sueetie Development Environment Configuration

I've been asked to document on my Sueetie Development Visual Studio and IIS configuration to demonstrate how to support debugging across multiple applications. Below is this morning's addition to the Sueetie Wiki, Working with Sueetie in Visual Studio.   It also covers IIS7 configuration.  I work with Sueetie on a standalone Windows 2008 Server, so your environment may require a different configuration. ____________________   The Environment Overview Sueetie Development that...

  • WCF .SVC 404.3 W2K8 IIS7 Fix

That's a fun title, eh?  Let's see if the keywords improve on it. Keywords: Service SVC is undefined, SVC 404 Not Found, AJAX WCF JQuery, SVC file 404.3, SVC in browser, Windows Server 2008 and WCF, IIS7 No, guess not. I finally began my trip down JQuery Road, thinking it will be a useful tool in conjunction with WCF for some cool Sueetie v.Next functionality.  I spent hours trying to connect JQuery with a WCF .SVC service on my Sueetie development site, so hopefully sharing my...

  • Introducing Sueetie Groups

Yeah, that's right.  Sueetie Groups, as in… Groups!   Groups within a .NET-based Online Community Application, sharing a single website, a single membership system, a single database, a single license.  Oh, wait.  It's Open Source, so there is no license.  Scratch that last part. Groups were one of the capabilities of the Sueetie architectural model that I wanted to demonstrate early on, as I've spoken to a number of companies who were looking for this functionality...

  • Sueetie: In moving to Windows Server 2008 and IIS7

We're making good progress moving Sueetie from Windows Server 2003 and IIS6 to Windows Server 2008 and IIS7.  When my Awesome Host Provider migrates my virtual server to Windows Server 2008, Sueetie will be ready. Moving Sueetie to Windows Server 2008 and IIS7 was always an important goal because it symbolized that it was time to get to work.  For the last couple of months in Sueetie's short existence we've demonstrated that a solid community platform was possible using Open...

  • Sueetie: Where's Waldo's WSAT?

We have an interesting situation developing in the Sueetie Community: the CodePlex Open Source membership management program used with Sueetie has vanished.  It's the weirdest thing, the CodePlex ASP.NET WSAT Membership Administration project is now just a pretty picture with the message, "It was a great run! Over 5000 downloads. For now however, I no longer have the time or desire to manage this project. Perhaps I will be back with something more popular at a later point down the line...
