  • MSDN Visual Studio 2010 Launch – Windows 7 Developer Topics

Here’s the recording from my launch presentation last month in Seattle.  Topics are Windows 7 multi touch APIs and the new improvements in .NET 4.0 and VS2010 to writing parallel code. Enjoy! Read More...
  • Everyman on Why Not, Sucky Content, a Manifesto, Worth Paying For

Start Asking “Why Not?” Today. In this Design Shack post titled Why Your Great Ideas Will Fail we’re advised to look at the negative to enjoy success when developing a product. Rather than locking-in on what’s unique and great about our product, we should look at its weaknesses as well. “Building a better mousetrap is in many respects the easy part. Getting people to use that mousetrap is the hard part.” To help customers transition to our product we want to look at why certain people would resist...
  • Fresh Sueetie Version 1.3 Bits in the Sueetie Marketplace

Gummy Bear 1.3 has been updated in the Sueetie Marketplace with fresh bits to fix the issue of not automatically redirecting to the Install Page on the first site load.  The SQL setup scripts should now also be fully SQL2005 compliant. The Gummy Bear 1.3 Upgrade package has been updated as well as the Atomo Developer Package.  Setting up Gummy Bear (and Atomo) should be instant and pain-free. My apologies to the initial downloaders of Version 1.3 whose experience was probably neither. ...

  • Sueetie Has Arrived: Introducing Atomo for Developers

It’s been a year-and-a-half in the making, but Sueetie has finally arrived to where I envisioned it to be from the beginning. Introducing Atomo for Developers 1.3, a single Visual Studio Solution containing all framework source code for customizing Sueetie Communities and building all-new applications with the Sueetie Framework.  As written in the Sueetie Manifesto, “No commercial or Open Source community application ever meets the requirements of a community without additional custom development...

  • Welcome New Customer: Vail Resorts

Vail, Colorado holds a special place in my heart. In my early 20s, I spent a brief time living the ski-bum life, working odd jobs and living with seven roommates. My family and I still return to Vail to ski every year. It is especially exciting to me that Vail Resorts has selected Telligent Community to foster collaboration and communication both within their organization and with stakeholders. Vail is the premier mountain resort company and a leader in luxury destination-based travel. The new community...
  • June 20th, 2010: The Day Gummy Bear 1.3 was Released

Gummy Bear 1.3 is now available in the new Sueetie Marketplace. Released a little over 3 months since version 1.2, Gummy Bear 1.3 adds many major architectural enhancements. Localization, Background Tasks, Multi-Blog support, Event Logging and Exception Capturing, a completely restructured Theming Model…like I said, major. In addition to the new features is a new installation experience that has reduced a four-step process to a single step while eliminating both the YetAnotherForum.NET and Gallery...

  • Sueetie Marketplace: Out with the Old, In with the New

I don’t know if you’ve been to the Sueetie.com Marketplace recently, but it’s undergone a major upgrade to have more of the look and functionality of a real marketplace with real products.  In fact, it’s the new home of all Sueetie distributions including Gummy Bear 1.3, Theme Packs, Add-ons, Developer Packages and anything else that finds its way into the Sueetie Product Family. As of this minute you’ll find the Lollipop Theme Pack in the Sueetie Marketplace, though I suspect by the time you...

  • One-Click Install On Tap for Gummy Bear 1.3

Gummy Bear 1.3 is almost here, so it’s time to tell you about the new and improved installation process. In previous versions we clicked a button to execute the framework SQL setup scripts, then we walked through the YetAnotherForum.NET Setup Wizard, then the Gallery Server Pro Setup Wizard, then clicked a link that ran a script to create application-dependent SQL objects. Not painful considering the end result, but in Gummy Bear 1.3 those four steps are now a “Don’t Make Me Think!” one-click experience...

  • Everyman on Simple to Share, Free Shipping, Pleasing the Wrong Person

Simple to Share. After Hugh MacLeod’s book Ignore Everybody became one of my all-time favorite reads, I pay much more attention to what Hugh has to say, like in a recent CopyBlogger guest post on growing his business. According to MacLeod, nothing moved his business forward like old fashioned word-of-mouth marketing, with his newsletter subscribers telling their friends about his newsletter and suggesting that they sign up.  He then added a requirement. “Make it easy.” We cannot make subscribers...
  • My Favorite Office 2010 Features

This post is a departure from my usual developer-focused content.  A fun part of my job is variety.  I was asked to speak on my favorite new consumer features of Office 2010 for the ‘ Jeff Levy on Computers Show’ .  (I will record this show on Monday with Jeff and will post a link to the stream after it’s published).  In preparing for this interview, I found a number of new features that I had NOT yet discovered, so I decided to share them with you – enjoy!    In PowerPoint...

  • Teaching Kids Programming – After School Class Lessons Learned

Llewellyn and I have just completed our first after-school program introducing kids to programming (using the Intentional Method of teaching and SmallBasic) and I wanted to share the lessons we learned here. First, a description of what we did.  We volunteered to teach within an existing after-school framework.  The classes ran for one hour per week, each week for 14 weeks.  Our class consisted of 7 or 8 kids, ranging in age from 8 to 12 years old.  The school had an existing...
  • Live Webinar: Harnessing Collaborative Technology for Emergency Response: A Haiti Case Study

Please join Telligent on Wednesday, June 23, at 11 a.m. Central for a webcast entitled "Harnessing Collaborative Technology for Emergency Response: A Haiti Case Study." In this session, Telligent founder and CTO Rob Howard will present a relevant, real-world example of how Telligent's platform was used by the Department of Defense to forever change the way emergency response is handled. On January 12, 2010 an earthquake devastated the island nation of Haiti. The Department of Defense...
  • Everyman on Website Do-overs, Two-Second Rule, Every Company a Media Company

Website Do-overs. Excellent MarketingProfs article on things to consider on your next website, but also worth considering for existing websites that should be thinking “do-over.” Points to consider include looking at your customers’ needs more than what your competitors are doing online. “Your web presence is much bigger than just your website.” Very true. In the context of a Sueetie website, a secure administrative group area for recording and evaluating other web efforts is perhaps a good idea...
  • New Gallery Server Pro Original Image Display Feature Coming

If I had more room in the subject line it would say "New Gallery Server Pro Original Image Display Feature Coming…With a Little Help from Sueetie."  What’s the new image display feature?  Coming in Gummy Bear v1.3 you'll be able to click on any Gallery Server Pro standard-sized image and view the original image in a new browser tab. You can see it in action in the new Sueetie Administration Screenshots album. Viewing the original image in a new browser tab may not sound very...
  • Teaching Programming Tools – Virtual Proctor

Why – Live proctors aren’t enough As we’ve taught kids to program around the world, we found that having a live proctor for each 10 kids (or 5 pairs, as we have the kids pair program while learning), was essential to keeping the hands-on coding activities on track and on pace.  Despite our best efforts to keep the pairs coding though, we found ourselves as teachers having to ‘go around’ to see where the kids were at during our live events.  This resulted in a slow-down of the rate we could...
  • All New Lollipop Theme Coming in Gummy Bear v1.3

I'm happy to report that Version 1.3 of Gummy Bear will no longer be, um, ugly. You can see it online at sueetie.com. If you don't believe me that it's an improvement, here is a copy of the current Lollipop home page at http://gummybear.sueetie.com next to the new Lollipop Theme home page at http://sueetie.com . The new home page will include all of the Sueetie List View controls on the right-side, no longer requiring site admins to recreate list views from the demo page.  On the...

  • IGNITE LA – Speaking on Teaching Kids Programming

Last night I was one of the speakers at IGNITE-LA .  The lightning talk format is interesting – 5 minutes, 20 slides, automatically advancing every 15 seconds.  This is called ‘Pecha Kucha’ and means ‘chit-chat’ in English. I will update this blog post to include the link to the recording after it’s posted.  Below is my deck – enjoy! Ignite LA View more presentations from lynnlangit . Read More...
  • Everyman on Navigation Rethink, Cloned Goals, Cap’n Crunch, The Blink Test

Navigation Rethink. A new Landing Page Makeover clinic from CopyBlogger with the issue jumping out from the page being rethink your navigational scheme. The site had an image-based menu that was madeover with a menu representing the core points that the prospective customers cared about. The site was a kid’s clothing store, so the questions were, What are you selling? How do I order? (ORDER INFO) What about special requests? (FAQ) How do I contact you? (CONTACT US) What if I don’t like it? (RETURNS...
  • Sueetie now featuring YetAnotherForum 1.9.4 RC2

Announcing YetAnotherForum 1.9.4 RC2 on Sueetie is something I’ve been looking forward to doing for a long time. I started playing with 1.9.4 since Beta 2, then Beta 3, then RC1. I was close to deploying several times but thought it best to wait. Now closing in on the release of Gummy Bear v1.3, when Jaben Cargman announced YAF 1.9.4 RC2 a week ago I stopped what I was doing and put upgrading YAF at the top of my Sueetie Essentials list. There are several new features not found in YAF 1.9.3 like...
  • Teaching Kids Programming with Bubbles!

Llewellyn Falco and I have been writing FREE courseware to introduce kids to programming with SmallBasic for awhile now.  Last night we recorded screencasts (for teachers) for one of our more advanced recipes – Simple Bubble.  More information in general at our website, ‘Teaching Kids Programming’ . The first screencast covers how we teach the basic recipe (called Simple Bubble).   The second screencast covers how we teach the variation to the recipe (called Bubble Wand). We’ve made...
