  • Everyman on Software Product Checklists, Application Hearts and Minds, Every Site a Mobile Site

Software Product Development Checklist Supreme. SecretGeek with a checklist of 124 to-do’s in creating, selling and sustaining a successful software product. In this case the product is a standalone .EXE, but valuable for a web-based application as well. Most pertinent to-do’s for Sueetie’s current state of development are (more) screenshots of app, drive support costs down, update email signatures so you’re always representing product, faq, policy and privacy pages, bug tracking software, soliciting...

  • Registration Requirement to Comment at DBVT.COM is Dead

I know it’s been a long time coming and I apologize to everyone who bumped up against a “Please login” link when wanting to add a comment at DBVT.COM, but I am happy to announce that the requirement to create a site account to comment on my blog is now dead.  After spending quality time with BlogEngine.NET’s Spam Filtering in v1.6 I know I can fully trust it to manage spam effectively for me. I can’t imagine that another blog application can do a better job preventing spam, and it’s only due...

  • Using the Power of the Sueetie API for Good (Fighting Blog Spam)

There was a flood of pingback spam hitting .NET-based blogs over the last 24 hours as you may or may not know. In discussing it on Twitter someone tweeted about modifying the Comment Email Extension to do IP filtering which is when it dawned on me that Sueetie has IP Banning support.  Sueetie IP Banning was designed to block spammy users from polluting a Sueetie Community, but it could be equally effective in blocking pingbacks by their originating IP address. I must tell you right off the bat...

  • Stylin: Infinitum

This site was featured in most of the CSS Showcase sites. Interesting slightly-noisy background and rich use of images in a well-balanced layout. The designer took a risk butting the top-left logo against the page margin with no spacing, but it works. Link to Infinitum | View all Stylin Sites Read More...

  • Everyman on Micro Magazines, Cornerstone Pages, Predictive Horizons

Micro magazines for a fast and specific world. Seth Godin discusses the allure of micro magazines, describing weeklies like Time and Newsweek as being slow and general, while in contrast the world is fast and specific. Godin lists why micro magazines reflect our current reality and are attractive to both advertisers and readers. Being digital, they are free to print, they have subscribers, are focused on specific issues to a very specific audience, enabling that audience to connect, and where significant...

  • Saturday Afternoon Sueetie Newsletter Subscription Module Update

I blogged about the new Sueetie Newsletter Subscription User Profile property earlier today and said that I wouldn’t feel good releasing Gummy Bear v1.3 without some sort of reporting capability. I took a few minutes and threw something together to serve as a Newsletter Subscription Module Nub. The Newsletter Subscriber Administrative Report is below. It simply tells you how many subscribers you currently have and generates two comma-delimited lists, one with email addresses and a second with user...

  • Use it Just for Fun, the New Sueetie UserAvatar Control

The new Sueetie UserAvatar Control was a feature I made sure got into Gummy v1.3, not because users were clamoring for it but because I wanted one.  It’s one of those controls that’s fun to use in some weird geeky sort of way.  You know, drop <SUEETIE:UserAvatar runat=server /> on a page and suddenly a user’s photo appears. Fun!  I also enjoyed coming up with the back-end logic for this control since the inheritance model for passing contextual object properties is a little tricky...

  • It’s Time for Sueetie Time Zones

Someone in the Sueetie Community correctly pointed out that users could not modify their forum time zone setting since the Sueetie User Profile is used globally and links to the YetAnotherForum.NET User Profile are hidden.  My bad. This is now fixed in Gummy v1.3 with a new Sueetie Time Zone User Profile property. Because the main purpose of adding a user Time Zone property is to support YetAnotherForum.NET, I naturally patterned it after YetAnotherForum.NET's design. It was interesting...

  • The Inception of Sueetie Newsletter Subscriptions

I’ve been reading Online Marketers I respect who advocate Community Newsletters and thought, “Yeah, we should do that in Sueetie.”  So I took the first steps for Gummy Bear v1.3 and added a Newsletter Subscription Profile Property.  Here you see it on the Sueetie.com registration page.  It is not-checked by default. The subscription option is also on the User Profile page so users can sign-up later or change their mind. For those of you who may be really excited by this, concluding...

  • User IP Geolocation Lookup for the Obsessive Sueetie Community Administrator

You may recall that the first feature I added in Gummy Bear v1.3 was IP Banning.   It now has a bonus one-click User IP Geolocation lookup feature. Here's a screenshot of the administrative user profile page. It’s funny how I keep learning about things with Sueetie that I never thought would be part of the program. In this case it’s how weird people from all over the world (and some geo-hot spots in particular) find some sort of twisted satisfaction in creating site accounts to post nonsense...

  • Sueetie User Activity Report Updates

A new User Activity Administrative Report is coming in Gummy Bear v1.3.  It displays all Activity unfiltered by display and syndication flags, and gives you the ability to delete individual items if someone were to post spam in your forums, for example. Also in Gummy Bear 1.3, the individual User Activity descriptions are localized, with a screenshot of activity string resource elements below. I realize that generating strings with required English-equivalent terms and phrases in a specified...

  • Facebook: To Serve Man

I deleted my Facebook account today and I feel fine. As for why I left, I couldn’t help thinking I was in a Twilight Zone Episode titled “To Serve Man.”  Facebook was the master alien race and I was heading up the stairway into the spacecraft. If you don’t happen to be familiar with this classic Twilight Zone episode from 1962, a 9ft tall alien race called the Kanamits land on earth, eradicating disease and hunger and the need for warfare. Everyone completely falls for these guys and is tripping...

  • Using the Sueetie Cross-Application Footer Menu Control

I upgraded dbvt.com to the latest Sueetie bits, which consisted primarily of converting it from a Website to a WebApplication project and apply the consolidated theming structure. While I was at it I did some design cleanup across the applications, which included applying newer user controls like the Sueetie Global Footer Menu. The Sueetie Footer Menu Control is a scaled-down version of the Global Site Menu Control. What's geeky cool about the Sueetie Footer Menu is like the Site Menu Control...

  • The Humble SueetieTheme Control

I’m performing my due diligence in disseminating all of the Sueetie UserControl news that’s fit to print, regardless of where the control may rate on the general sexiness scale. Today’s new control is SueetieTheme, and while ever so humble it will no doubt get a lot of play in Gummy Bear 1.3 and beyond. The SueetieTheme control is a quick way to add stylesheets using the recently updated Sueetie Themes model. For those who may have missed the post on Sueeting Theme changes, here’s a picture that...

  • Sueetie Now a WebApplication Project and Here’s Why

Sueetie has been converted from a Website Project to a WebApplication. I wanted to do it right so I went file-by-file and it’s super clean. Love it!  I hope you will, too. I converted Sueetie to a WebApplication because I’m laying the groundwork for Gummy Bear v1.4 which will be focused on custom development, and for custom development we needed a WebApplication. The project type hasn’t been an issue to date because I do all Sueetie development on Windows 2008 Server.  I actually like Website...

In Depth.  Ha!  Fooled you!  Localized Page Titles in Sueetie are coming in Gummy Bear v1.3, but there’s nothing deep about them.  In fact, localized page title logic in Sueetie is cool precisely because it ISN’T deep. Real simple, just the way we like it. Here’s the new Sueetie Wiki Page on Localized Page Titles with plenty of screenshots to dissolve any complexity. ____________________ Page Title Essentials The essential components that comprise the process of supporting customizable...

  • New Sueetie Url Handling Model and the SueetieLink UserControl

Part of the fun in prepping Sueetie for Gummy Bear v1.3 is localizing existing web page content and links. I’m kidding about the "fun" part, because it isn't fun at all—the unglamorous side of Sueetie Development, for sure. What was fun, however, was coming up with a new Sueetie Url Handling model to support a new SueetieLink Control that I needed to support the localization of hyperlinks. Below is the familiar Sueetie Patterns and Origins wiki page on Sueetie Url Handling and the SueetieLink...
