  • SoCalDevGal warns don't skip the SDL when creating your first Windows 7 application

If you have been following this series then you are probably raring to open VS and get coding.  I mean, c’mon, we are developers here and that’s what we do, right?  Well, yes – eventually.  But one last thing before we start that.  We need to take a more comprehensive look at new features in Windows 7 and then think about how to apply those features to a particular business problem.  For the purposes of this series, I am going to code an application that is designed to solve...
  • SoCalDevGal will get you working with Windows 7 application development - grab some software and get going

Starting to develop for a new platform means some software setup, I’ll detail what I am using, list possible variants on my configuration and include links to everything so that you can get set up quickly and easily as well. Software needed falls into three main categories – the platform (OS) itself, developer tools and then software development kits (SDKs) and samples.  I will be as complete as is possible here, however, I am sure some of you reading are using cool tools or samples that I haven...
  • Everyman Links for May 26, 2009

The Wolf Howls Still. The Three Wolf T-shirt mentioned in our last Everyman continues to instruct and inspire. This Murketing post title nails it. Supremely bad T-shirt acquires narrative, meaning; becomes top-seller. Did someone say “social media?” The Washington Post also explores The Wolf in It’s Made of 100% Cotton; Its Sales are 99% Ironic. My Excellent Cable Modem Adventure. I’m going to take a chance and share the story of my cable modem replacement. I tweeted last Thursday morning something...
  • Memorial Day Hike in Niquette Bay State Park

A few snapshots from Niquette Bay State Park located in Colchester, Vermont, about 30 minutes from our front door.  I didn't know this place existed until yesterday, so it was a wonderful Memorial Day discovery.  We wanted to take a family holiday hike somewhere close to home, but somewhere different.  Niquette Bay State it was!  Yet another reason why Burlington is a such great place to live. It's like my optometrist likes to say, "Burlington is so close to Vermont...

  • SoCalDevGal will get you working on Windows 7 application development – touch some hardware first

The first step in starting to develop on a new platform includes obtaining the software for that platform of course.  Before I talk about software though, I am going to talk a bit about hardware.  Because I want to develop an application using the multi-touch features of Windows 7,  I will be using hardware that is enabled to support this feature.  I am fortunate enough to be working with the the HP TouchSmart TX2 multi-touch enabled laptop.  It’s a beauty, isn’t it? Here...
  • SoCalDevGal wishes to woo you to the Windows 7 desktop

So, let’s talk here.  When is the last time you developed a Windows application?  Yeah, I thought so – me too actually.  You’ve probably heard a bit about Windows 7 and might be thinking that it’s time for you to take a look at it.  If you are the action-type, you can just download the release candidate now.  However, before you willy-nilly install it on mission critical systems, be reminded of this little item from the FAQ: Can I upgrade from the RC to the final version...
  • Blog Comments Now Display Sueetie Member Profile Avatars

I started working on something else in Sueetie this fine Sunday morning when observing the lack of integrated BlogEngine.NET Avatars bugged me enough to get it out of the way.  YetAnotherForum.NET avatars are integrated into the Sueetie framework, so BlogEngine.NET avatar integration remained to complete the job. Rather than retrieve a commenter avatar from MonsterID, Wavatar or Identicon on Sueetie blogs, the comment photo now displays the member profile avatar.  They are also linked back...

  • Sueetie Profile Updates: Member Favorites

Sueetie didn't get much love this week, but it did get enough after-hours attention that I can announce the display of Favorites on Sueetie Member Profile pages.  If you recall, tagging blog posts, blog comments, forum topics and forum messages as favorites are supported for Sueetie blogs and forums (BlogEngine.NET and YetAnotherForum.NET.) Here's what those favorite items now look like on the User Account page (when members click "Welcome, [Their Name]." Abiding by our new...

  • Report from StepUp First Annual Career Conference in Carson, CA

On Saturday after TechEd, I attended the first-ever StepUp Career Conference for underserved high-school aged girls.  This event was put on by the national StepUp non-profit, based in Los Angeles and was hosted at the Dermologica HQ in Carson, CA.  On this day 30 girls and their professional mentors participated in a series of activities around career development.  I was connected to this organization’s  local lead, Alexa Brandt , by formerly LA-based do-gooder Sloane Berrent...
  • Report from TechEd – WomenBuild 2.0 SeriousPlay with LEGOs

Happy to have led the Women in Technology event at TechEd last week.  Asli Bilgin and I have been working with a team at Microsoft to build this event brand for a year now.  Microsoft has hosted WomenBuild events across the US and Australia already and intends to host more in the future.  (Take a look at the original video of the day Asli and I met and the day we got this idea – just for fun.) The idea is to hold events which implement a type of speed group problem solving facilitated...
  • Everyman Links for May 18, 2009

Proud to be human, or…Hungry Like The Wolf. Sometimes you’re exposed to such a rush of creativity that you realize how damned good it is just to be part of the human race. The reviews for this Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt on Amazon do just that. Excerpts like, “The women in Wal-mart that approached me wanted to know if I would be their boyfriend and/or give them money for something they called meth. I told them no, because they didn't have enough teeth, and frankly, a man with a wolf-shirt shouldn't...
  • Report from TechEd – Jam on IT Community Party

Thursday was community party night at TechEd.  In addition to the attendee party, we in SoCal were able to invite around 300 people from the local tech community (who weren’t registered to attend TechEd).  It was really cool to see who turned out for our free food and drink, and then hung around for the social events, the Birds of a Feather informal tech sessions hosted by INETA, the women in tech event (more on that in the next blog post) and/or the speaker idol competition.  Here...
  • Report from TechEd – Windows Mobile Applications Update

People ask me ‘how do you keep up?’ Well, sometimes I don’t.  I am horribly ‘behind’ in the world of Windows Mobile applications, development, etc…So I decided to spend a bit of time at TechEd trying to remedy that situation.  First I attended the (in)famous Windows Mobile Smackdown session.  If you’ve never seen one of these, catch the video or, better yet, attend live.  The mobile team is well-known for their crazy all-demo and only-demo style.  For this smackdown, they...
  • Report from TechEd – ITPros know how to throw a great party!

Well it wouldn’t be TechEd, if there weren’t one or more fun parties to attend, but I have to hand it to our corporate ITPro team this year.  Their Windows 7 SpringBoard party at the StandardLA was really great. The atmosphere was great – Stephen Rose (Sr. Community Manager Windows Client ITPro) was a great host.  He’s also been literally traveling the entire planet talking non-stop about Windows 7 .  If you know an ITPro – send them his way.   Joey Snow from TechNet Edge was...
  • Report from TechEd – What’s new with SQL Server BI?

During the day, whenever I could I hung out in the SQL Server Business Intelligence world (another main site – here ) – sessions, floor booth, also I did a book signing for my BI book .  I was also fortunate enough to have a long lunch with Gemini PM Donald Farmer .  So, what did I see? 1. GEMINI!   What the heck is this?  “Self-service BI” (delivered from within Excel) is the shortest description.  This really doesn’t do it justice though.  From Mosha’s blog : In the...
  • Report from TechEd – MVP pre-show summit

Sunday before TechEd I represented local evangelists at the TechEd MVP pre-summit.  In addition to meeting several MVPs for the first time, I got a chance to plan new events with key SoCal MVPs (most of whom also lead or actively participate in local User Groups as well) -- James Johnson , Denny Cherry , Mike Vincent , Andrew Karcher , Mark Rosenberg and more attended. Here are some of the ideas for new types of events that we kicked around – what do think? 1) Give Camp – a weekend coding smack...
  • Report from TechEd – What is Oslo? What is M? What is Intellipad?

All week at TechEd I worked in the Oslo booth in the SOA area.  I worked with Kris Horrocks , Miguel Llopis and Shy Cohen .  Kris and Miguel are on the Oslo product team and Shy is an architect and trainer, who recently left Microsoft after over 10 years in Redmond.  Working with Softies from the Product Team is always a treat because I get to ‘go deep’ into a technology.  This is definitely something I miss about my job as a broad reach developer evangelist.  I spent a good...
  • Sueetie Profile Updates: Member Bios

[Repost from Dave Burke’s blog] While I was working with the Sueetie Member Account page for Following and Friends I figured I needed to create a Member Public Profile page as well.  Then I had this empty space on the Member Public Profile page and realized I needed to fill it.  It was time for a new Member Bios feature! Here's my Public Member Profile page, displaying my mug and bio.  You'll also see a tab to display my Following and Friends info.   Below is the new Bio...

  • Post TechEd SoCal Tech Events

There are worse problems to have, but a person really needs stamina to keep up with all of the possible tech events in SoCal.  I had fun at TechEd, working in the Oslo booth with the team (finally met Don Box in person!), leading the WiT event, attending sessions (mostly BI or Windows Mobile), and, of course, being social.   If you didn’t make it to TechEd US last week, check out TechEd Online.  I think one of the most interesting parts is the blog aggregator page – here .  Also...
  • Sueetie YetAnotherForum.NET Update Roundup

[Repost from Dave Burke’s blog] Sueetie Following and Favorites tagging support for YetAnotherForum.NET is online at http://sueetie.org/forum . Sueetie Group applications have the same features as site apps, so you'll find Following and Favorites support on the Sueetie Public Demo Group Forum as well at http://sueetie.org/groups/demo/forum . While I was enjoying some quality time with YetAnotherForum.NET for Following and Favorites, I thought I'd make a few other modifications to tighten...
