  • SoCal Architect Councils | The Importance of the Client

The Value of the Client – In the past, the choice of how an end user interacts with an application has been dictated by IT and often without regards to the usage.  Recently, as the population has become more tech savvy and are experiencing interactions on the web, computer, and the phone their expectations have increased tremendously.  Many organizations now have to support multiple standards and technologies to accommodate their user base.  We will discuss the opportunities...

  • Everyman Links for February 26, 2009

Murphy Server 2008. This is my first Everyman since losing Murphy on February 3rd. I still find myself going through the day with Murphy in my head and heart, making sure I don’t hit him when pushing back from my office chair, or glancing in the rearview mirror to see him in the back of the Passport. Then I remember he’s not there. On a positive note I recently upgraded my office machines and named my new Windows 2008 Server “Murphy,” so Murph will continue to be with me throughout the day. Here...
  • Introducing Sueetie Groups

This post was originally posted on Dave Burke's blog. It is reposted verbatim here. Yeah, that's right. Sueetie Groups, as in… Groups! Groups within a .NET-based Online Community Application, sharing a single website, a single membership system, a single database, a single license. Oh, wait. It's Open Source, so there is no license. Scratch that last part. Groups were one of the capabilities of the Sueetie architectural model that I wanted to demonstrate early on, as I've spoken...

  • Nordic Track Book Club Review: The New Influencers

The New Influencers: A Marketer's Guide to the New Social Media by Paul Gillin is intended to help marketers and PR professionals influence their constituents with the same effectiveness as bloggers, podcasters and other social media New Influencers. Many good bits for thought, most notably how we can individually become more effective influencers. In reading the traits of new influencers it’s also probably safe to assume that we are more influential than we give ourselves credit for, since most...
  • Sueetie: In moving to Windows Server 2008 and IIS7

We're making good progress moving Sueetie from Windows Server 2003 and IIS6 to Windows Server 2008 and IIS7.  When my Awesome Host Provider migrates my virtual server to Windows Server 2008, Sueetie will be ready. Moving Sueetie to Windows Server 2008 and IIS7 was always an important goal because it symbolized that it was time to get to work.  For the last couple of months in Sueetie's short existence we've demonstrated that a solid community platform was possible using Open...

  • Where's WSAT?

About a week ago we learned that the original author of the WSAT Membership Administration project pulled the source code from CodePlex.  This was certainly a suprise, but it is actually a good thing for Sueetie.  Sueetie uses very little of the WSAT source and the DIFF work for that project was pretty extensive.  This will allow us to incorporate membership into the Root Web project and eliminate a separate membership/administration project altogether.  One less thing. One of...

  • Styling individual Community Server sidebar widgets

I do so much weird stuff in Community Server, like today when I needed to style selected sidebar widgets different from others.  Sidebar CS Widgets share the same CSS classes in a single ContentFragmentList control <LeaderTemplate />, like so.   <CSControl:ContentFragmentList runat="server" Property="WikiWidgets"> <ItemTemplate>     <CSControl:ContentFragment runat="server">         <LeaderTemplate>...
  • Sueetie: Where's Waldo's WSAT?

We have an interesting situation developing in the Sueetie Community: the CodePlex Open Source membership management program used with Sueetie has vanished.  It's the weirdest thing, the CodePlex ASP.NET WSAT Membership Administration project is now just a pretty picture with the message, "It was a great run! Over 5000 downloads. For now however, I no longer have the time or desire to manage this project. Perhaps I will be back with something more popular at a later point down the line...

  • Awesome virtual server hosting

You and I probably subscribe to many of the same RSS feeds, so you may have seen the above title on a recent post from Ken Robertson.   I'm using the same title to reinforce Ken's message that he really does provide awesome virtual server hosting. I've been a happy customer of Ken's for nearly two years and I have NEVER had a better hosting experience or enjoyed better value.  Ken is one of those guys who can do it all well.  I won't go into detail of what Ken provides...

  • I miss my Murphy Dog

It’s been a week since we lost Murphy. Murphy came into our lives 12 years ago through a Pittsburgh Gazette classifieds ad titled “Golden Retriever-Mix Puppies.” It lead us to a trailer on a dirt road outside of New Stanton, PA where Murphy was among 10 or so other puppies in a make-shift wire-fence pen. We chose Murphy from the other puppies because he was the sweetest. Murphy lived his first 4 years in the great city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We took occasional evening walks at Frick Park and...

Are you a web developer and/or designer?  March 18-20 in Las Vegas is Mix09 and you should go.
