  • Nordic Track Book Club Review: The Myths of Innovation

I’m a bit behind on my Nordic Track Book Club reviews and pulled The Myths of Innovation from my stack of Nordic Track books to get back into the groove. I enjoyed walking through it again. 3.5-out-of-5 Nordic Track Stars. It didn’t get 4-stars or higher only because it was @160 pages and I’m going through an anti-skinny book phase. Still, lots of insights on the definition of innovation and its execution. Recommended. ------------------------- p.8 Big thoughts are fun to romanticize, but it’s many...
  • Windows Azure screencast series for .NET Developers

I am planning to record a many-part screencast (demo-filled) series for you, my .NET developer friends.  As I work on the outline and abstracts, it occurs to me that I might simply ask you, 'what topics would you like to see me cover?'  The idea is to make a USEFUL set of screencasts focused on implementing Windows Azure (code samples and sample applications) - no power point. To get you started thinking, here's my 'rough list' - you comments are WELCOMED! Ideas for...
  • New and Improved Wiki User Account Creation Now Available

This is a repost from Dave Burke’s blog.  The original post is located here. I spent some quality time this past weekend improving how accounts are created in ScrewTurn Wiki when a new user registers in Sueetie.   I originally redirected from the Sueetie Registration page to an autologin.aspx page that I created in ScrewTurn to create a Wiki account on ScrewTurn’s own turf.  That worked fine and allowed me to get Sueetie on the street more quickly, but it was clumsy and I was never...

  • Sueetie: New and Improved Wiki User Account Creation

I spent some quality time this past weekend improving how accounts are created in ScrewTurn Wiki when a new user registers in Sueetie. I originally redirected from the Sueetie Registration page to an autologin.aspx page that I created in ScrewTurn to create a Wiki account on ScrewTurn’s own turf. That worked fine and allowed me to get Sueetie on the street more quickly, but it was clumsy and I was never happy with it. A bit of elegance has now surfaced to replace the redirection logic in the form...

  • CS Nuglet: Centering a variable item Navigation Menu by role

This is a pretty simplistic nuglet, but I went about my business for two days living with a non-centered navigation menu until this simple fix presented itself. The issue is one most of us encounter: Anonymous users see 4 menu items in their Navigation List, Registered Users see 5. This is usually not an issue unless we need to center it on the page. CSS-wise we use an Outer Div at 100% width, then place the Navigation List in an Inner Div of a set width using auto margins. The problem is specifying...
  • CS Nuglet: Determining first forum thread post for custom UI display

I needed to display a graphic under the user avatar on the first forum thread post today and found it to be an interesting little task. Essentially I took an approach similar to highlighting an author's comment in CS2008.5, which I always thought was pretty slick. You'll find that on …/hawaii/post.aspx. Look for IsAuthor(). For our purposes of displaying a graphic in the first forum thread post under the user avatar, we add a Conditional Content control with a custom IsFirstPost() method...
  • CS Nuglet: Flexible Editor Type Selection by function

Community Server supports three versions of the site editor. The editor is used throughout the site for functions that vary from managing a user's Bio to entering Forum and Blog posts. The three editor versions are Plain Text (no HTML), Standard (HTML), and Enhanced (more HTML widgets.) The editor used on the site is defined in the communityserver.config file <Editor /> area where the three are listed with one designated as default. Each user can also set their editor of choice in their...

  • Everyman Links for January 20, 2009

Inauguration Day with the Cleaning Lady. Today’s historic Inauguration Day will for me always be associated with our cleaning lady. She’s a real gem and we like her a lot. This gal doesn’t stop scrubbing the floor while answering her cell phone. I’ve seen it. At 11:45 this morning I head downstairs from my office to watch the inauguration ceremonies and she’s dusting the TV (and doing a darn good job at it.) So I head back upstairs and catch the ceremony on the TV in my wife’s office. The noise of...

  • Stylin: Seed Hunter

This is actually a very important project, preserving seeds for use in the aftermath of a climate disaster. What’s Stylin about the site is thematically converting a subject that can appear to be rather dull (gathering seeds) and brand it as an Indiana Jones adventure. • Stylin: Cad and the Dandy

I pulled this page up from my Stylin’ bookmark folder and wondered why in the heck I’d what to feature this as a Stylin’ site? I think it’s the minimalism of the page. Not often a site goes without a distinctive header, footer or other styling staples. This is a site from the UK, so maybe it’s a British aesthetic. The CSS equivalent of fish without the chips perhaps? MMMMMMmmmm. Fish and chips…… Link to CAD and the Dandy | View all Stylin Sites Read More...

  • Stylin: FreshBox

There are a lot of good looking food sites out there. I wish I knew how to do the fan affect shown here, which is still popular after making the dbvt.com Stylin’ charts some 8 months ago. This page reminds me of a scene with Michael Palin and Shelley Duvall in Time Bandits. Vincent : Oh no. The problem. The problem, Pansy! It's started again! Pansy : Oh! Oh, don't worry, darling! Vincent : Ohhh... ohhh... Pansy : I say! Vincent : I must have fruit! Link to Fresh Box | View all Stylin Sites...

  • Stylin: Manndible Cafe

This site has probably appeared on every one of my CSS site feeds, and I subscribe to almost 20. The distinctive layout and original artwork are the primary reasons. The snapshot at right is also a slideshow. Getting additional visual-based information across. Link to Manndible Cafe | View all Stylin Sites Read More...

I like the manipulation of color with mostly monochromatic primary elements and a single green to reinforce their brand. Very informative site. Not conversational, but informative. Link to Urban Green | View all Stylin Sites Read More...
