  • Trouble in Zune 80GB Paradise

Thousands of 30GB Zune owners have joined the “My Zune is a Brick” club on this New Year’s Eve day after a Y2K-like issue killed their Zunes. Some sort of clock bug related to 2008 having 366 days is apparently causing 30GB models to reboot and then hang before completing boot-up. Brick! While I have an 80GB Zune that still boots up, I’m here to report that there’s trouble in Zune 80GB Paradise as well. I was listening to an album on my Zune that I downloaded with my [up to now, fantastic] Zune Pass...

  • Coming back to NORMA

As I study all things new in languages and modeling, I return to an improved old friend.  I bought myself Terry Halpin's second edition of 'Information Modeling and Relational Databases' and am happily re-invigorating my knowledge of ORM.  What's ORM, you may ask?  From the ORM Foundation website: "ORM is an acronym for "Object-Role Modeling" and is a way to build information models from which logical models can be automatically derived. ORM uses the...

  • Project Gummy Bear feeds Sueetie Progress

This post is heavily borrowed from “Project Gummy Bear hits the Cyberstreets” on the Sueetie Blog, but I wanted to make sure everyone had the latest word. I’m still in flux on how to approach posting both here and at Sueetie.org, but I’ll start by avoiding post duplication and go from there. The idea of moving content to Sueetie.org and providing highlights here will probably win the day, but we’ll see how it goes. As I said in “Sueetie: The First 48 Hours” My immediate goal is to duplicate what...

  • Trying out Code Contracts from Microsoft Research

There are two sections that get added to VS 2008 after you install the add-in from MSR to test Code Contracts .  The first one is simply called 'Contracts'. The second tab is named 'Code Contracts'.  The MSR team did a presentation at PDC08 about Code Contracts and the Pex automated-testing tool. In the area of contract-based coding at Microsoft, there is also Spec# .  Sample shown below. using System; using Microsoft.Contracts; public class Program { static void Main...

  • Project Gummy Bear hits the Cyberstreets

The current Sueetie imperative is to package and document Sueetie so that other developers can quickly throw-up their own community sites and we can collectively start getting down to business.  To achieve that goal I am building a Sueetie project...

  • What's in your Visual Studio?

As I continue my current language-exploring mode, I've noticed that Visual Studio 2008 is becoming a candy store for me.  Is it just me, or do we have an incredible amount of new stuff to play with?  I can't really remember the last time I watched TV, other than Slumdog Millionaire there hasn't been a movie to catch my interest for awhile and when I am done coding, I just want to read a technical book to 'go deeper' in this stuff.  I going to need a geek-intervention...
  • Holiday Sprit

So, have you got any email like the one I got from a close friend last week? "Due to the current economic state of our household, we are not able to send gifts.  I hope that you will not send anything as well.  I made deals with all friends not to do gift exchanges this year. It is uncomfortable to receive and not be able to give!  Thanks. If you are in need of tax write offs and need to give a charitable donation.  My son's school is accepting donations.  I have...

  • Sueetie: The First 48 Hours and the Next Two Weeks

The response to Sueetie has been greater than anything I experienced before. It’s clear that a lot of people get the membership-centric, loosely-coupled .NET Open Source application model of Sueetie. As for Sueetie.org launch issues, two folks that I know of had trouble registering. One was good enough to email me and the other I learned about from “Sueetie” searching on Twitter. That was my fault. The registration piece was mine and I didn’t handle weak ASPNET passwords of less than 7 characters...
