  • Reporting Live from PDC2008 : Vermont

Twitter is a marvelous thing. Without flying to Los Angeles, our crack DBVT Staff can deliver, via the #PDC Twitter Stream, each and every PDC2008 highlight for you without ever having to get off our fat asses taunt, shapely buttocks. All hail "ScottGu Mode!" This is probably one of those "had to be there" tweets, but if each of us had a ScottGu Mode this ol' world of ours would be a much better place. The Gu always has the cool toys.. Aren't the other kids jealous? "The...

  • SERIOUS PLAY @PDC08 and more

I really love PDC - so many announcements (check out MSDN Ch9 videos from the event), seeing so many friends in person, geekdom and now WomenBuild with Serious Play from Lego - oh, and it's in my home town too! The many funny T-shirts are cracking me up as well. See more pictures from PDC08 LEGO SERIOUS PLAY - BUILD YOUR WAY TO BETTER BUSINESS Read More...
  • Passing Querystring Parameters to a Silverlight Control

Two good screencasts on passing parameters to a Silverlight 2.0 Control are available on Silverlight.Net. The first from Mike Taulty demonstrates InitParameters as a property in the ASPX Silverlight control. The second from Tim Heuer demonstrates using InitParameters as well as how to pass in Querystring parameters. Both are worth a look. The approach to passing Querystring parameters to a Silverlight 2.0 Control that works for me is pretty simple. We check for the presence of Querystrings in the...
  • Everyman Links for October 26, 2008

MY NORDIC TRACK IS BUSTED! I'm sorry to have to start today's Everyman in crisis mode, but after 14 years of use, my Nordic Track is finally showing its age. The electronic box that calculates distance and time stopped working two days ago, and I noticed the main pulley assembly wheel is getting extremely hot after a typical 60-minute workout. On the bright side, this may turn out great since I found a "Free Nordic Track!" ad on Craigslist from someone in Shelburne, just 10 minutes...
  • Silverlight 2.0 Immersivity: End of Week Recap

This will be the last Silverlight 2.0 Immersity post because we've arrived at the portion of our show where it's all .NET all the time. Now that the datagrid is pretty much in place, we're back to supplying the Business Logic to populate lists, update, insert and delete data on the back end of the Web Service, same-old-same-old. Then again, this is the beauty of Silverlight 2.0 as I always anticipated it since my first look at ReMix07 Boston. After some initial orientation, it's just...
  • MS Surface in the real world ATT Retail Demo, and, at PDC08

Interesting to see 'real-world' use of Microsoft Surface.  This video was taken an an ATT phone store California and it shows a store employee explaining how to use the MS-Surface application to help customers. Since I am getting ready to head downtown LA for a week to attend PDC08.  I can't help but think about what kind of applications the PDC attendees will develop on the Surface.  Our MS Surface team announced on their blog that every attendee at PDC08 will be able...
  • Intellisense Luv for a Friday

One of the good things about being older and typing out code for so long is being able to appreciate how far Microsoft's great development tools have evolved. The intellisense in VS2008 seems much improved over VS2005, and VS2005 intellisense was good! Take this little example of populating a new data object. Of course, what I need is a CodeSmith template to bang this out for me, but intellisense still makes it a snap. I'm going through the properties alphabetically, get to my 3rd item where...

  • Silverlight 2.0 Immersivity: Datagrid to ComboBox Data Binding

Our Silverlight 2.0 period of Immersivity today gives us the opportunity to work with ComboBoxes in our DataGrid. The issues that need to be addressed are binding the correct value of the ComboBox-enabled column, binding a list to the ComboBox, and handling data updates. Without further adieu we'll go straight to the WOW! factor and display the latest version of my Silverlight 2.0 DataGrid app. Pretty RAD, eh? Before I "canvas" the broad-strokes on how to add a ComboBox to a DataGrid...
  • Silverlight 2.0 Immersivity: Datagrid Two-Way Data Binding

The Silverlight 2.0 period of Immersivity continues with today's keywords being Silverlight 2.0 Datagrid; Silverlight 2.0 Two-Way Data Binding; 2-Way Data Binding; No-Way Data Binding. (Just joking with the last one. HA! HA!) For good or bad, I stuck with my master plan of not spending resources on Silverlight until 2.0 went RTM, so I have no experience with anything that came before. I've learned quickly however that Silverlight 2.0 DataGrid data binding was changed in RC0 from the betas...
  • Oslo and SOA and more...

We launched a cool new site to help you understand and use real-world SOA (service-oriented architecture).  I particularly like the section explaining Oslo .  I also like the Solutions section.  What do you think - is this site useful?  Microsoft SOA Products: Oslo Read More...
  • Silverlight 2.0 Immersion Begins

I have the opportunity to immerse myself in Silverlight 2.0 for a week or two. The immediate objective is to replace a bandwidth-intensive custom Community Server form with a Silverlight 2.0 version. The long-term objective is to move the interactive quality of the apps I write to the next level. It's difficult for freelancers like me who live and die by the billable hour to dedicate blocks of time to get up to speed on new technologies. There's no corporate training support structure and...
  • Death by Email

Ever feel like you just can't get on top of this? It's startling to think that I have over 1 GB of work-related email now. That is, of course, only one of my six or so various email accounts. How many messages do you receive per day? How many do you process per day? How many do you delete per day? How much time do you spend doing this each day? Interesting to look at the referenced article that is nearly 7 years old. Not much progress here. How can we get better? What do you think? I'd...
  • CS Nuglet: The Return of the Home Page Content Part

One of the best features of Community Server of Olden Times was the home page Content Part. You might've been clueless about Community Server, but when you loaded up your new community site for the first time and logged in as "admin," it was immediately apparent that you could double-click on the home page and begin the process of making your community site your own. That's a big deal, or at least it was, and it served as a powerful introductory metaphor to Community Server. What...
  • PDC, TechDays, CodeCamp, BarCamp - Oct / Nov Developer events in SoCal!

We'll we've got a raft of live events coming up in SoCal for developers in late October and early November.  You may be thinking, hmm...which one(s) do I go to? how do I choose?  I'll write a bit about all them here, maybe that will help you to choose. If you can afford it, PDC08 is always inspirational, exciting and just plain old fun.   Our tip, bring your boss with you.  No, we don't mean actually hang around together at the event, just convince your boss...
  • Everyman Links for October 14, 2008

Crawling out of the subprime-ordial slime. I haven't done an Everyman for over two weeks. I have to be in a positive frame-of-mind to Everyman, and as you can probably relate, it's been a rough two weeks with all of the financial turmoil going down. Zuning Friday's Marketplace podcast during my daughter's soccer game on Saturday morning helped me turn the corner. Marketplace reporters drove around the country on an Interactive Road Tour for two weeks talking with regular folks about...
  • I write like Madonna

My handwriting looks like this too, so why don't I have a bodyguard and a jet? (kidding) Oh, and...I'll be seeing my favorite material girl yet again at Dodger Stadium in LA on Nov 6th - text me if you are around that night. BTW...this is a pretty cool site showing HardRock memorabilia using the just released Silverlight 2 . If you are trying to keep up (and learn) what's new then Tim Heuer's blog is a great place to start. Also MVP, Shawn Wildermuth is offering up a great Silverlight...

  • Nordic Track Book Club Review: Unleashing the Killer App

Unleashing the Killer App: Digital Strategies for Market Dominance by Larry Downes and Chunka Mui was published in March of 1998, yet I was surprised by the many forward-thinking concepts that I continue to see in much more recent marketing and product development books. Not a lot of concrete instructions for geeks on the ground, but still time well spent on the Nordic Track reading rack. 4-out-of-5 Nordic Track Ski Stars. --------------------------------- p.5 Less well-known than Moore's Law...
  • Business Intelligence Visualization via Microsoft Surface

From the demo shown at the Microsoft BI conference last week.  This gives me lots of ideas about data visualization possibilities for BI - what about you? Also if you've not seen a Microsoft Surface device and you'd like to - let me know.  If you weren't able to attend the conference but would like to get updated on all of the BI announcements made there, then listen to these podcasts . • Getting this political bookmark monkey off my back

I really wanted to do an Everyman tonight, but I have to get this political bookmark monkey off my back first. It's that damned Palin. She drives me frigging nuts. I feel like Jenny's angry boyfriend in Forrest Gump. He runs around frothing, treating Jenny like crap, then falls back on "It's just that lying son of a ***, Johnson!" in apologizing for his violent outbursts. When a client asks me, "Dave, do you have that report online yet?" and I respond, "I was...

  • CodeSmith Project .csp ConnectionStrings Security Tip

I'm working on a CodeSmith template package for distribution that includes a Project .CSP file. It will be important to set as many property defaults as possible to help people get up to speed with the templates, so I made an effort to set defaults across the board. I noticed an aspect of how the CSP stores default values that may be something to watch out for if you ever distribute CodeSmith CSPs. The CSP project properties are stored in XML. Works great, but if your project uses a SQL object...

  • Nordic Track Book Club Review: Get Slightly Famous

I enjoyed this book a lot. Get Slightly Famous: Become a Celebrity in Your Field and Attract More Business with Less Effort by Steven Van Yoder presented a practical approach on how to grow your business. The key to "Slightly Famous" success as described by Yoder is to establish a niche specialty as the first priority, then promote that expertise by employing marketing strategies in a variety of media and communication venues. 4-out-of-5 Nordic Track Ski Stars. ----------------------- p...
  • Psst...wanna' meet some geekGirls at PDC08?

Then join us at WomenBuild . So, what the heck is this? It's a free session for developers who are registered for PDC08. Guess what - it's for both men and women! The pre-con session is centered around building your career as a developer. It will be held on Sunday, Oct 26 from 10 am to 5:45 pm at the LA Convention Center. Yes, the focus is on growing careers for women developers in particular, but we know from experience that some men are interested in this topic as well. Plus, you get to...
