  • Human Popfly

While preparing curriculum for the upcoming DigiGirlz technology summer camp to be held at Microsoft's office in Irvine, CA on Aug 18/19, I stumbled across this 'human PopFly' video and just couldn't stop laughing. I am such a geek, but not a human Popfly (yet!). BTW...if you haven't taken a look at PopFly lately, then check it out. Also, I've had many inquiries about Digigirlz. This year's camp registration is full with a huge waiting list. We are hoping to have more...

Tipping Point for e-Books? Princeton University will be publishing Kindle-editions of its textbooks this fall, joining Yale, Oxford and Berkeley in supporting the Kindle. That's great news for trees everywhere. My interest in the Kindle has ticked-up lately. I very much appreciated Seth Goldin's recent review of the Kindle. Interesting observations include, "It's for women and women are buying it." "It changes what it means to buy and own a book." "The Kindle...

  • Nordic Track Book Club Review: Here Comes Everybody

I knew I'd enjoy Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations by Clay Shirky and I wasn't disappointed. Shirky writes about the dynamics of groups and collaborative productivity in an environment where online communities can now be created so easily. A lot of takeaways here that apply to Open Source development, and I will be reading this book again. Many more excerpts where these came from. 5 out of 5 stars. ------------------------- p.16 Almost everyone belongs to...
  • WALL-E

A Fun geek movie to be sure - of course, I especially loved the Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator, otherwise known as Eve. BTW...be sure to check out the movie's companion website, it's beautifully designed and a bunch of smiles as well. WALL-E : Official Site Read More...

Keyvan Nayyeri is one hot Iranian stud! I mean that in a purely non-sexual way, of course. This young man of 23 has been impressing me for a while now and he keeps pouring on the .NET gas, which is a pretty good analogy to describe a hot .NET developer from Iran, I suppose. Keyvan was instrumental in the development of BlogML, spearheaded the two Community Server MVP Module Packs, is working on his centralized spam prevention system called Waegis, authored a Wrox book on Visual Studio 2008 Extensibility...

  • Nordic Track Book Club Review: Evolve!

I purchased Evolve! : Succeeding in the Digital Culture of Tomorrow by Rosabeth Moss Kanter from Amazon just recently after reading an excerpt and several positive reviews. I made the mistake however of failing to notice that the most recent review was entered in 2002 and that the book's copyright date was 2001. 9 times out of 10 books written on digital culture and business from this time period remain informative and original. This book was neither. It was the worse written thing I placed on...

  • New Amazon Product Preview Popups

Another cool Associates widget from Amazon, Product Preview Popups. It's the first Amazon script I've used on my blog. You can see the Preview Popups in action on my "Amazon Burst Buy" post. Mouseover popups have several obvious advantages, providing additional book information to readers without requiring them to leave and return back to the post, adding some color to the page, the speed of display, increasing interactivity, and no clicking required! The script that makes the Product...

  • Amazon Burst Buy for June 2008

I buy books from Amazon in burst mode. I sprinkle my wish list with interesting books over the span of a few months and then I usually buy between 6 and 8 of them. It was about time for another purchase. And besides, I've been spending a lot of quality time on the Nordic Track recently so new books are a reward. I have a history of listing the books I order in burst mode as I did in an April post, in February 2007, and in June 2005. I obviously missed recording a few packet transmissions along...

  • Making the SEO Transition to BlogEngine.NET

It was important for me to make a speedy and complete SEO transition of my four years of Community Server blog posts to BlogEngine.NET. If tonight you went to Google and searched on "site:dbvt.com" you'd find a nice library of posts that click clean and true to their current location. The site index is still building, but everything seems to be populating and promulgating according to the Master Plan. I wanted to share a bit of the BlogEngine.NET SEO setup process with a few pointers...

  • A BE.NET Search Retrieval Easter Egg

Becoming familiar with BlogEngine.NET is a bit like discovering Easter Eggs. Here's one such BE.NET surprise that occurs when a page is retrieved from a Google search. BE.NET displays the visitor's search terms and 3 other site results for the search. That also means that within about a week, four years of dbvt.com/blog posts have been re-indexed by Google, updated from their Community Server Urls and searchable by their new BlogEngine.NET addresses. A post describing how I made the SEO transition...

  • Smart Business Intelligence Solutions with Microsoft SQL Server 2008: Lynn Langit

Isn't the cover pretty? I have no idea what the tool that was selected to be featured on the cover actually is - do any of you? Anyway the important thing is that you CAN pre-order the book already from Amazon. Yes, the co-authors are 'a-changing', Matthew Roche is no longer associated with this project. Kevin Goff's name will be corrected shortly on the cover, but I was just so excited to see it that I wanted to blog it! We are looking to publish later this fall. This book covers...
