  • "Professional Community Server Themes" Now Available!

It appears that online booksellers such as Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble now report " Professional Community Server Themes " as being "In Stock!" I'm very excited that this book is finally available! This book covers most everything about themes -- understanding how URL rewriting works, creating new themes, using Chameleon and Dynamic Configuration , creating custom Chameleon and Dynamic Configuration controls, controlling editors, post markup processing, and other related...

  • CSTiers is born

A new CodeSmith Project enters the world and its called CSTiers, named after the excellent .netTiers project. While .netTiers creates a complete website, CSTiers will create a DBVT Community Server Visual Studio customization project framework. Almost every Community Server customization project I do involves five areas: DBVTConfiguration, DBVTContext, DBVTUrls, a Data Provider and original Chameleon Controls. The objective of CSTiers is to create the structure for each of these areas when I start...
  • CSDC Wrap

Community Server Developer's Conference was this past weekend and it was great. We're feverishly trying to get our session videos edited and published so look for those soon. We really enjoyed having everyone here in Dallas and are looking forward to next year! In this video, which happens to be TelliCast #20, we catch some session intros and meet with some of the attendees who travelled from all over including Argentina, England and Israel - or as Amy puts it, from all over the country....

  • www and search engine optimization

A common question we get from customers that use Community Server is: When I make a request to my Community Server site the "www" is stripped off the domain... While it's easy to change this behavior in Community Server , it's actually done on purpose to help ensure the site is optimized for search engines. A search engine actually sees www.example.com and example.com as 2 separate sites and content on these 2 sites are considered duplicates and the site will actually get a penalty...
  • The Best Developer Conference

Of course I may be biased, but our first Community Server Developer's Conference was a huge success! Folks from around the world (at *least* four continents) came out to Texas (on a weekend) to hear more about where we are at and where we are headed. If you missed it, our own Kevin Harder live-blogged the entire event . I had the opportunity to give two talks at the conference. The first was about Community Server 2008 and how we'll be expanding the platform. During this brief presentation...
  • Community Server Byte for October 23, 2007

blog bits CSDC 2007 is now history. Ben confirms there will be CSDC presentation videos coming. Kevin Harder provided live on-the-scene blogging, and Josh Stengel provided the best independent coverage of the event. Interesting sidebar: According to Kevin's Day Three account, "Everyone eats the Mexican lunch and listens to the Applied Innovations demo," since Applied Innovations "was kind enough to sponsor today's lunch." Yeah, I guess. Sales pitches during lunch are rarely...
  • Talking about Community Server Theming at the CSDC

This past weekend at the CSDC , Wyatt Lyon Preul and I presented a two-part talk about implementing themes in Community Server -- both what is available in CS2007 as well as what we're adding in CS2008. We had an excellent turn-out and a lot of great questions (both during the presentation and one-on-one). It was great to meet with developers from all over the world and discuss their experiences, wants and needs in regard to implementing themes. For those who could not attend the CSDC, videos...

  • Introducing Stylin

I've been collecting links to sites with style or have certain aesthetic qualities that set them apart. Since I do a lot of theming it's also good to have a ready reference to sites that I like. Bookmarking the sites isn't efficient enough because I have to click on text links to display the screenshots I'm looking for, and that could be a lot of clicks. So to provide a better reference to stylin websites I created my new Stylin blog at http://dbvt.com/stylin . A screenshot of the...

  • Live Blogging the CSDC

I will be "live blogging" the 2007 Community Server Developers Conference today similar to how Engadget live blogs Apple Keynotes and such. This post will get continually updated throughout this morning with the latest news, announcements, witty observations, and hopefully a few pictures. After the lunch I will probably start a new post to live blog the afternoon sessions, and then new ones for tomorrow as well. Enjoy! 9:02 AM - The room is filling up as people arrive at the Stonebriar...
  • 2007 Community Server Developer Conference

It's finally here! We've been working all week preparing for our first ever Community Server Developer Conference and it starts tonight. We have just under 100 people attending - and honestly this is a lot more than we expected for our first developer conference. We're going to capture all the presentations and publish them as videos on www.communityserver.org after the conference so everyone can benefit from the content. Of course there is going to be a lot of special stuff we're...
