  • Mr. Lema & Book Inspires Blogging and New Design

After reading the many recent posts by Jose Lema I have been inspired to begin blogging again. It has been a few weeks since my last blog was created.; Aside from writing more posts, I am also working on a new blog theme for myself. Once it is complete I will make sure it is available for anyone to get a hold of. The great news is that over the weekend I created a design from the ground-up. Currently, I am working on mocking up the html and css. After this I am going to begin creating the Community...
  • Graffiti Marketplace

As I mentioned earlier , I recently checked in some changes into the Graffiti core to support what I'm calling the "marketplace" feature. Since Graffiti is a new, and therefore smaller product than Community Server , it's a bit easier to try out new ideas. The concept of the marketplace is simple. In Microsoft Word, when you want to create a new document, you can start with a blank document or select from a list of templates...all shipped with the product. Additionally, however...
  • Too Many Choices...

Over the summer I had the chance to head down to Disneyland with one of my boys, Noah. We had a great time, but we ran into a "puzzle" early on at the hotel. We were in Room 318...Which way? One of the things we've recently been focused on is reworking the Control Panel of Community Server . While it will always have numerous options, we don't want our users to run into the type of problem I had soon after checking into that hotel. Choices are good, but sometime they're unnecessary...
  • Roomba? No! ConnectR? iWant!

The other night on woot! I saw an offer for an older model Roomba . If you haven't heard of the Roomba, it's essentially a small automated vaccuum cleaner from iRobot . So, while I decided not to purchase ($150) I did spend some time looking around the iRobot site and stumbled upon the iRobot Create . Apparently as more and more people starting "hacking" the Roomba, iRobot decided to release a Roomba minus the vaccuum! After spending way too much time following links that night...
  • The Core Team Grows...Again

Finding people to join a great team is hard work. And finding *great* people is even harder. We've made some additions to the team over the past handful of months, and I figured I'd introduce folks, albeit a bit late for a couple of them. Earlier his year, in July, we made a great addition to the Product Team with Jayme Davis . While Jayme has recently been focusing on adding features to Graffiti and general clean-up, he has had his share of resolved items in Community Server as well. Even...

  • CS Nuglet: Displaying content on selected pages

One of the functions of Chameleon I use a lot is the DisplayConditional control. It's incredibly versatile. I often search through the CS.Web application .ASPX pages for various use examples of DisplayConditional controls. One such condition I used twice today in different contexts was the DisplayConditional used in conjunction with the CurrentSiteUrlCondition CScontrol. Let's say we wanted to place a message on our site to appear on all weblog home pages, and ONLY on weblog home pages. To...
  • Hack-a-thon

In TelliCast 16, we catch up with our favorite local and remote Telligenti shortly after partaking in a Graffiti hack-a-thon. Jason Alexander introduces the hack-a-thon and we hear from a number of the participants. The winning submissions were José's widget gallery, Ken's and Blake's really simple installer and Ben's UI tweak to support drag-and-drop positioning. Note that several PM's, including yours truly , entered the hack-a-thon - Graffiti widgets MUST be easy to write and...

  • Chameleon-based Charge Labor Business App

I knew I'd love my Community-Server-as-a-Business-Application project because I knew I'd be creating Community Server controls and modules like no one else, and I think a Chameleon Charge Labor app fits the bill. I only have time to show the final version of the Charge Labor app for now. I've included a solution explorer image at the very bottom of the post displaying some of the classes required to build the app and reflects the Chameleon topics I hope to cover in future posts. Those...
  • Professional Community Server Themes

I had the pleasure of working on a great project earlier this year with two very talented co-workers: Wyatt Preul and Ben Tiedt . I served as the Technical Editor for their new Wrox book, Professional Community Server Themes . Between the awesome information provided by Wyatt and Ben and the excellent example set by Rosanne Koneval, the Development Editor, I learned a ton about both Community Server's Theming Engine, Chameleon, and the book development process. It was a great learning experience...
  • Community Server Byte for September 19, 2007

blog bits Rich Mercer with a very informative post on extending Community Server email services. Example project code included with the post. Community Server SP3 is now C2007.1, but you already knew that. Rob Howard with a good breakout of what's new. Super instructions from Mr. Instructions Himself, Dave Stokes, on installing CS2007.1. New Enterprise Reporting coming to Community Server. Great demo site. Besides the reports themselves, it would seem that with Enterprise Reporting new site content...

  • Community Server 2007.1

Today we are thrilled to announce the release of Community Server 2007.1! About three weeks ago we announced a "beta" of Community Server 2007 SP3, but after looking at all that had changed, we realized that this was *much* more than just a service pack release. While this release includes many bug fixes, there are also some significant enhancements, particularly around performance and scaling. Also, since our service pack releases have been so successful for existing sites looking for...

  • Creating Blog Breadcrumbs in Community Server

The Chameleon theming engine in Community Server 2007 makes creating a blog breadcrumbs way too easy. Below is a blog breadcrumb and the HTML code used to create it. The circled HTML has to do with creating a tag breadcrumb, which we'll look at next. Please ignore it for now as we create a breadcrumb consisting of the site, the current blog's group, the blog and the post. "Way too easy" would not, however, accurately reflect the process used to modify our breadcrumb to include the...
  • Associating a Photo Gallery Tag with a Blog Post

This post covers the high points of associating and displaying a tagged collection of photos with an individual blog post in Community Server. Let's say I was doing a series of Vermont State Of Mind Goodness, using my recent Hike to Camel's Hump Summit post as an example. For each post in the series I wanted to display four images from a specific photo gallery tag with a link to all photos associated with that post. In this example I would want to display photos tagged with "Camel's...
