  • TelliCast Episode #3

In Episode 3 we talk Chameleon with Ben Tiedt. Chameleon is the new theming engine in Community Server 2007 designed to make theming Community Server easier. The UI controls are now much more robust and flexible. Instead of having a "super-control" per page in Community Server, we now have more generalized "Chameleon" controls related to each piece of data or object in the Community Server API that you can use as needed throughout your skin. Ben also discusses THE Chameleon book...

  • VISA's RWC Debate

VISA's RWC Debate showcases the ability to integrate video and Flash with Community Server, while creating multiple customized "skins" to target specific markets. COMMUNITY SERVER in Action On behalf of Visa International , IMG Media was tasked with finding the best software solution for hosting a web community campaign for Visa to showcase their Rugby Legends ahead of Rugby World Cup 2007, and Telligent's Community Server platform provided the foundation upon which a fully customised...

Colin elaborates on implementation inconsistencies across modules, tightly bound application modules and documentation deficiencies. Fellow Browncoat Andrew Tobin has been blogging up a Community Server storm recently, his most recent post detailing his Identicon and Gravatar installation from the CarKnee Bundle for CS2007. A number of other CS posts from grr...

  • Making the SiteUrls.config selected link "light up"

Here are the steps on "lighting up" a selected navigation link in Community Server after we create and determine the url to our site article. That's how the question was asked and I like the term "lighting up" so I'm using it here. We want to make the menubar link to a content page be the selected tab in other words. For our example the site article url is getablog.aspx and we've created the link in SiteUrls.config that looks like this. <link name="getablog"...
  • Themes.CommunityServer.Org

There are about 7 weeks or so left in the Community Server Theme Extravaganza . As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we extended the initial deadline to give folks a little more time to work on their entries. We also felt that we could do a couple of things to make it even easier on our users to submit entries. The first of which I am happy to announce today. Introducing: Themes.CommunityServer.org : Themes.CommunityServer.org is a version of Community Server which allows you the end user to build...
  • Video blogging comes to telligent.com

If you have been waiting to actually *see* some of us talking about Community Server 2007 , then the wait is over. Last week, on the official Telligent blog , we began a series of video-blog posts called Tellicast. The first episode is an overview of CS2k7 by Scott . He makes you feel right at home from the beginning with a friendly wave. The second video in the series was posted today and includes yours truly talking about shared membership (Morpheus) from a high-level. Note to self: the camera...

  • Community Server Byte for June 18, 2007

blog bits Ben Tiedt with the most detailed and complete article written to date on using CS2007 Sub-forms. A really excellent tutorial here. I add to my CS Queensryche Calendar series with a post on sharing a blog with multiple authors with a focus on preventing an author from editing the posts of other blog authors. While describing Chameleon's SiteUrls CSControl in a CS Forums reply, I realized it wasn't the answer to the question, so I wrote a blog post instead, A SiteUrl CSControl Quickie...
  • SiteUrl CSControl - One More Time! For Site Articles

Site articles are Content Parts, and in CS2007 (and prior, though I don't know how far back) they can be displayed on a single page. The /themes/[theme]/content/content.aspx page can be used to format the articles just the way you like them. I haven't used this feature so my demo page isn't all pretty the way it should be, but it gives you the idea of what a site article page looks like. The url of a Site Article is http://mysite/content/contentpartname.aspx. The contentpart name is shown...
  • TelliCast Episode #2

This week we visit with Jose Lema and get an education on Morpheus, the architecture behind the Membership and Roles system in Community Server 2007. Morpheus allows you to select an external store for your membership and roles data so if you have an application with membership data in it and you'd like to add Community Server functionality to your offering, you can point Community Server 2007 at your existing membership rather than importing and synchronizing your membership data in multiple...

  • Linking to an article in Community Server 2007

I couldn't resist answering a question on CS Forums on selected navigation and how to link to an article, since the questioner ended with "So, basically, the articles feature for the main site is neutered?" When someone throws down a neutered challenge, I'm all over it. My argument, by the way, was that to link to an article from the Site Navigation Menu, a new SiteUrls.config link element and a SelectedNavigation CSControl line in a copied blog theme.master does not a neutered...
  • A SiteUrl CSControl Quickie

There are a number of juicy web controls now available in Chameleon, one of which is the SiteUrl CSControl. As its name applies, the SiteUrl control creates a hyperlink from url information provided by the SiteUrls.config. In the .ASPX or .ASCX page its use would be something like the following where I am creating a link to my running blog at http://dbvt.com/running from my site home page. <CSControl:SiteUrl UrlName="weblogapplication" ResourceName="weblogs" runat="server"...
  • CS Queensryche Calendar Blog: Sharing a Blog, Track 1

I've received a few emails asking for more details on how to share a blog in Community Server. This was something I had to account for in the Multi-date Calendar Blog, and so the Queensryche Calendar Blog Series continues with "Sharing a Blog, Track 1." The main thing we need to handle when sharing a blog is preventing users from editing other authors' posts and from making global changes to the blog. We'll start with isolating users from other authors' posts and begin on...
  • Extending User Registration using Sub-Forms

A common Community Server customization involves adding fields to the registration form (CreateUserForm control) and performing custom actions based on these fields. Chameleon provides an easy way to extend the CreateUserForm control by using Sub-Forms. Sub-Forms are controls that can be registered against a Form control (such as the CreateUserForm control) and participate in the action of the form. In this guide, a sample Sub-Form control will be created to allow registering users to select their...
  • Community Server Byte for June 15, 2007

blog bits The current build of Community Server is now 3.0.20611.960. Congratulations to the Core Development Team on a substantial SP release with CS2007 SP2. Give Glenn Wilson's cool Digg Add-on for Community Server a Big ol' Digg. A "ramble" on how Community Server enables the display of User Common Names. Not intended to be instructional, otherwise I would have titled it a "thesis," "exegesis" or some other word with "esis" in it. A Community Server...
  • Pruning a CS Website before uploading

Uploading a CS website used to be a pain, a really big one. It can be much less of a pain if you can upload a .ZIP of the site to your host provider and unzip either through remoting (if its a VPS) or through the Host Provider's Site Control Panel. Before I went to a virtual private server, WebHost4Life allowed me to upload a .ZIP and unzip it through their web account administrative UI. It worked really well. Recently I've gotten into the habit of reducing the .ZIP file as well. I uploaded...
