This is just my normal user blog for things that don't fit in the other blogs, but are tailored for the open source C/C++/C# and .NET communities.

Blog Comments

Hey Guys,

There seems to be a little confusion about adding comments to the blogs here.  I don't allow anonymous comments due to the high volume of spam, but anyone with a registered account can go post crazy.  I was forced to implement this rule a while back, as my systems seem to be a hacker target thanks to some one that I worked with a very long time ago.  Anywho, I just wanted to let everyone know that they can post comments and rate posts.

Take it easy,
Bill

Open Source UI Templates and new CS Theme

Even though both of the posts that I will reference are Community Server related, I decided to make this a personal post as the templates can be used by anyone, for pretty much any purpose:

  • Dave Burke created a very cool post entitled, "A Few Site Template Resources", which contain links to several UI design sites that he gets his inspiration from.  As a developer myself I can create a GUI, but it sure won't look purdy!  I can however make virtually any UI design work, so this is a trememdous help.  Thanks Dave.
  • The other thing that I would like to let everyone know about is the great work that Ben Teidt has been doing with the new theming engine of Community Server 2007.  If you don't already have a link to the site, click here to see the latest and greatest.  I am really looking forward to the production release scheduled for next week and SDK release shortly thereafter.

Take it easy guys, AWESOME WORK!

April Fools, May Tools

The title rhymes, so what the hey.  Well, it looks like my April Fools joke Site Policies: Effective Immediately, went over pretty well.  Dave Burke got a kick out of it and even tried to make it more visible with Bill Bosacker is out of control, but I think that he might have been a little too convincing when Ron Artest commented, "I'm noticing that his post was made 1 April - I'm thinking you got your crank yanked..."

I need to get back to my CMS.NET project, which is still in the research & design stage.  I just incorporated AJAX.NET into the design and am considering many different ideas on how themes will work.  Since a true CMS site is completely virtual, the typical theming that you see in applications like CS don't apply.  The layout for most pages is fixed, but the look of the objects can change as long as it doesn't change the contents.  I may steal a couple ideas from Ben Tiedt, but don't tell him that.  Zip it!

Take it easy guys...

Site Polices: Effective Immediately

Due to the large number of free loaders in the open source community, we have decided to enact the following policy changes:

  1. Effective immediately, anyone who wishes to use the site will be required to create an account.
  2. All users will be required to register a credit card with their account to pay for the new fees being implemented.
  3. Due to the major changes in the licensing of Community Server by Telligent, there will be a one time sign-up fee of $10.00 per user account to offset the fees being imposed.
  4. Due to Dave Burke's hard work within the Community Server community, part of the sign-up fees collected will be used to pay for his use of this site.
  5. We will be enacting a pay-per-feed system in order to recover some of the costs for site traffic.
  6. Users who are not contributing to any projects will be required to pay a monthly fee to access the forums.
  7. Users who click on over 200 ads within a 24 hour period, will be given a $10.00 credit to their account.
  8. Users are limited to 1 free download per year.  Additional downloads will be charged based on the amount of time it takes to complete the download.  The timer begins the moment that the download button is clicked, and ends once you have received the complete download.  If a download fails, make sure to try again ASAP as the timer is still running.
  9. To assist with the costs being implemented, we are considering a multi-level marketing system for users to increase site activity.
  10. We will be doing daily mass mailings to all registered users that will contain 3rd party ads.  You must click on at least one of the ads or incur a penalty of $1.00 to pay for the mass mailing.

Those are the major changes, but there are a few more.  The full policy can be viewed here.
